Resources communities in the Western Downs and Maranoa regions will benefit from a cash injection of almost $20 million into roads, sewerage and flood mitigation as part of the Newman Government’s $495 million Royalties for the Regions program.

Premier Campbell Newman said nine projects totalling $7.5 million in Western Downs and four totalling $12 million in Maranoa would be funded to service the increasing population in resource towns like Miles, Chinchilla and Roma.

“Royalties for the Regions is about reinvesting a share of royalties in resource regions to help build new and improved community, road and floodplain security infrastructure,” Mr Newman said.

“These regions were neglected by the Bligh Government and forced to cope with intense pressures from the resource sector expansion.

“We are now moving to address these problems. Spending will be directed to the areas with the most pressing problems where the biggest cumulative impact of resource development is occurring.”

The nine projects in the Western Downs region are:

  • Miles Water, Sewerage and Recycled Water Scheme Stage 1 - $1.29 million
  • Chinchilla Washdown Bay - $700,000
  • Fairymeadow Road Seal Widening - $1.2 million
  • Goombi Fairymeadow Road Seal Widening - $1.2 million
  • Bennetts School Road Sealing - $770,000
  • Weranga North Road Upgrade - $750,000
  • Mary Road Upgrade - $800,000
  • Joseph Road Upgrade - $470,000
  • Beelbee Road Sealing - $312,000

The four projects in Maranoa are:

  • Roma Sewerage Plant Augmentation - $2,180,260
  • Injune Water Augmentation Project - $160,000
  • Wallumbilla North Road Bitumen Seal - $5,035,000
  • Roma Flood Mitigation Project – Levee Construction - $5 million

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the Newman Government understood development and growth were having an impact across all mining regions and it would continue to target key problems in further Royalties for the Regions funding rounds.

“I am delighted these important projects are now able to proceed for the Western Downs and Maranoa communities,” Mr Seeney said.

“I will be announcing further projects receiving Royalties for the Regions funding in the coming days and weeks.”
