Work Begins on More Bruce Highway Black Spots

Posted On April 8, 2013

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport
Leader of the House
Member for Grayndler (NSW)

Travelling along the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Gympie is set to become even safer following the commencement of work this week on long overdue upgrades to the intersections with both Gardners Road and Pomona Connection Road.

The fully-Federally funded project is being delivered by Civil Mining and Construction Pty Ltd (CMC).

The $4.6 million package of works will realign Gardners Road, relocating its intersection with the Highway to the south. Dedicated left and right turn lanes off the Highway will also be constructed at both intersections and safety barriers and additional lighting installed.

The project will be completed in mid-2014.

Funding for these upgrades is coming from the Federal Labor Government's Bruce Highway Safety Package, the first ever program dedicated to fixing notorious black spots, installing new rest stops and building additional overtaking lanes. Already this initiative is:

  • Installing 50 new overtaking lanes;
  • Fixing over 110 dangerous black spots between Caboolture and Cairns;
  • Building some 24 new rest areas and stopping places as well as upgrading a further 11 existing rest areas.

Since coming to office in 2007, Federal Labor has committed over $3.3 billion to maintain and upgrade the Bruce Highway. When compared to the former Howard Government's record of just $1.3 billion over 12 years, that's more than twice as much in half the time.
