Vassallo Constructions has been awarded a contract to construct an overtaking lane on the Bruce Highway.
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the Australian government is fully committed to the project.
"The Bruce Highway between Mackay and Proserpine is a busy stretch of road, with more than 5,000 vehicles using the road every day," Truss said.
"Overtaking lanes such as this one will help make the journey safer and more efficient, giving motorists more opportunities to safely overtake buses, trucks and caravans."
The works will cost $3 million and will improve safety and efficiency for motorists on the Mackay to Proserpine stretch of the highway.
Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen, said the project is being delivered ahead of schedule.
"Overtaking lanes are a great way to increase capacity and reduce the risk of head-on collisions and I'm very pleased that works will get underway in coming weeks," Christensen said.
"As well as boosting safety, the fact these works are being delivered by a local company will help support jobs in the region and contribute to north Queensland's economy.”
The project is scheduled for completion by October.
